Fourth of July Fireworks with Smallmouth Bass on Pine Creek in The North Hills of Pittsburgh

Pine Creek Fishing (North Hills Pittsburgh)

Fished Pine Creek off of Wildwood Road and landed 2 Smallmouth Bass (See photos 14 1/2 and 12 1/2 inches ) 1 late season rainbow trout and a half dozen sub-legal bass.  Floated nightcrawlers and used panther martin spinners.  Water was very low so we just found the deepest holes, cuts, logs and bends in the creek to find the fish.  We also saw a huge Bald Eagle fly over the creek, which we thought on Independence Day fishing was pretty cool.

Trout Fishing in Pine Creek in North Park, Pittsburgh

We recently did some trout fishing on beautiful Pine Creek on the outside of North Park Lake in the North Hills of Pittsburgh.  We caught and released a few trout and some kind of sucker/bottom feeder.  There was a huge Palomino Trout sitting at the bottom of one of the deeper pools but he was not interested in our efforts to catch him. We were using Panther Martin spinners and Night crawler rigs.

Sasquatch Den in North Park Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Strolled right by a Big Foot den on while fishing Pine Creek in the outer perimeter of North Park, Pittsburgh.  I'm pretty sure it was a coyote den or something that ate meat as there were animals bones scattered around the den.  Or... Maybe it was the elusive Pennsylvania Sasquatch!

Pittsburgh Fishing During Coronavirus Pandemic

Headed out to go trout fishing on Pine Creek in the North Hills of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday, April 18th and was met with this odd sign in the parking lot along Wildwood Road in Allison Park. I usually adventure out into the woods or water to get away from folks for a while, so this sign reinforced my philosophy. In all serious, please heed the signs message and social distance, wear a protective mask and just use commonsense during this time.

On a brighter note, I did catch a 10.5 inch Rainbow Trout on a yellow with red dotted Panther Martin spinner and yellow Power bait worm teaser.

Stay safe out there!

Smallmouth Bass Fishing on Pine Creek Pittsburgh

Last night I was shaking my head and trying to figure out how great it was to be in a situation where I can catch sizable small mouth so close to home in the North Hills of Pittsburgh.  When I went fishing yesterday, smallmouth bass was not on my radar.

Pine Creek located near North Park is known for stocked trout and not for small mouth like the Yough, Mahoning Creek or other waterways that hold smallies.  Summer on Pine Creek is slow and I've fished the creek from North Park Lake to County Lane so many times and caught giant catfish and carp and normal warm water fish like bluegill, large mouth bass, crappie and so on, which all probably come from the lake but not once did I ever catch a sizable small mouth bass.

Yesterday I caught small mouth bass in a stretch of Pine Creek that didn't look like it got much traffic and if you weren't wading the creek I wouldn't know how you would get back there without going through overgrown bush and thorns. So I am thinking that the fish and game folks were not stocking back there.  I think these fish are likely spawn and holdovers as they were pretty good sized fish -  probably due to the lack of fishing pressure in that spot and a healthy waterway.  I've talked to a few fisherman that fish Pine Creek down around Bryant Road and they said the small mouth are down in that area and they usually do well at night.

Most of the section on Pine Creek where I was is shallow and flat with not much going on but when I finally reached the area where I caught the bass it was a whole different habitat, it was deep, slow moving, lots of downfall and perfect for bass - you just knew that there were fish in that spot.
